In the final group stage fixture of Euro 2024, England and Slovenia ended with a 0-0 draw in Cologne. England were frustratingly withheld by Slovenia till the final whistle. Despite the underwhelming performances, England finished their group on the top with two matches without a goal.
The match kicked off with England’s lackluster performance. From the beginning only, England struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities. In the first half, Bukoya Saka’s goal was disallowed for an offside against Phil Foden. The whole game saw very few chances for England to score a brace.
England’s coach, Gareth Southgate made only one change in the starting line against Slovenia. Southgate brought up Conor Gallagher for Trent Alexander Arnold after much controversy and criticism of failed experiments. Even Gallagher failed to find his rhythm in the field and was substituted for Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo impressed the supporters with his presence and mind and injected much energy into the gameplay. However, England lacked the creativity to break through Slovenia’s intact defense.

Southgate’s England team is underperforming at Euro 2024
In the second half, Harry Kane came very close to scoring but unfortunately missed the chance after missing a cross from Kieran Trippier into the box. Despite dominating possession, England’s lack of team chemistry and precision was upsetting for the fans and supporters. On the other hand, Slovenia kept on their fight to secure a point to qualify for the round of 16 stage of Euro 2024.
Slovenia posed occasional threats throughout the game with few counter-attack flicks and a resolute defense. Their goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, delivered a spectacular performance by making some crucial saves. The stalemate run of games of England – 0-0 draw with Denmark and now 0-0 draw with Slovenia – ensured England’s spot in the Knockout stage. Although being at the top of their group stage, England’s poor performances have raised concerns among the football enthusiasts and pundits. Critics have been urging Southgate’s team to improve their tactical approach and management significantly.
