Spain have announced their 22-man football training squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The standout inclusion in the squad is Barcelona’s promising 17-year-old talent, Pau Cubarsi. Manager Santi Denia has also included midfielders Fermin Lopez and Alex Baena, who are currently competing in Euro 2024. Their selection means they continue the trend set by Pedri, who competed in both the delayed Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics.
Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Pedri, who have been participating in Euro 2024, have not made the cut. while Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion has been included. Sergio Gomez is also named in the squad, joining Abel Ruiz and Juan Miranda as the three overage players. Additionally, the final squad, consisting of 18 players, will be confirmed by July 3.
Spain will convene next Monday at Ciudad del Futbol to start their Olympic preparations. They will then travel to Bordeaux on July 17 for a friendly clash against the USMNT the following day. Spain’s group-stage opponents at the Paris Olympics include Uzbekistan, the Dominican Republic, and Egypt.
Under-23 teams with three overage players can compete in Men’s football competitions at Olympics
The men’s football tournament at the Olympics consists of under-23 teams where up to three overage players can be included. Notably, the Olympics take place outside of FIFA’s official international football schedule.
The 2024 Summer Games begins on Wednesday, July 24, 10 days after the conclusion of Euro 2024 in Germany. The final of the men’s Olympic tournament is on Friday, August 9.
