Aston Villa is nearing a deal for the transfer of Moussa Diaby to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad. The transfer came just a year after Villa signed Diaby their record signing, paying £51.9 million to sign the Frenchman from Bayer Leverkusen.

Diaby started well in the Premier League but faded in the second half of the season, with Villa preparing to sell him to the Middle East. Football Winner brings this exclusive coverage of players who failed to stay in the same team, this Premier League 2024:

Andy Carroll, Liverpool

Liverpool has done a lot right in terms of recruitment over the last decade, but it hasn’t always been that way.

Andy Carroll’s arrival from Newcastle is a source of regret, despite the fact that the Reds broke the transfer record to sign the forward in 2011. Newcastle’s 11 goals in 19 league games in the first half of the season convinced Liverpool that their attacking giant Geordie was an appropriate fit, as Fernando Torres prepared to end his relationship with the Reds and join Chelsea.

Konstantinos Mitroglou, Fulham

In the 2013-14 season, Fulham relied on Kostas Mitroglou to help them survive. The forward, who had a good goal record in Greece, signed in January for a club record £12 million, but his time in England proved disastrous.

Mitroglou made only three goalless professional appearances as Fulham were relegated. “In January, during the promotion battle, we required a striker. So they went and got Kostas Mitroglou, I believe his name was,” said former Fulham player Steve Sidwell on JOE’s Liquid Football.

Angel Di Maria, Manchester United

Angel Di Maria was the marquee signing as Manchester United recovered from a shaky start to the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

David Moyes was succeeded by Louis van Gaal after an unsuccessful spell in charge, and the new manager was given £59.7 million to sign Di Maria. The deal broke the British transfer record, as United signed a winger who had played a key role in Real Madrid’s Champions League victory the previous season. Di Maria looked fantastic in his first few games, including an audacious chip finish at Leicester, but things quickly deteriorated.
