Manchester City star Erling Haaland to miss Carabao Cup clash against Watford

Erling Haaland is set to miss Manchester City’s upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Watford as he returns to Norway to attend the funeral of a close family friend, Ivar Eggja. The Norwegian striker, who has been in remarkable form this season with 10 goals in just five Premier League appearances, has been granted compassionate leave by the club. Haaland’s absence will certainly be felt, as the prolific forward has been instrumental in City’s success, but his personal loss takes precedence.

Eggja, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 59, was more than just a family friend. He was a trusted confidant and played a significant role in Haaland’s career, helping him settle into new surroundings at clubs like RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.

When Haaland moved to Manchester in 2022, Eggja arranged his living accommodations, allowing the striker to focus on his football. Describing Eggja as a “legend,” Haaland took to social media to express his grief, stating that words couldn’t convey the impact Eggja had on his life.

Erling Haaland continues to impress with his form

Despite the tragedy, Haaland continued to perform on the pitch, scoring twice against Brentford shortly after Eggja’s passing. His subdued celebrations during that match hinted at the emotional toll of the loss, as his teammates and the club offered their support by sending flowers and standing by him during training.

Manchester City will have to navigate their midweek Carabao Cup fixture against Watford without their star striker. However, Haaland according to Goal.com is expected to return in time for the club’s Premier League encounter with Newcastle United.

His presence, both on and off the field, is central to City’s aspirations this season, but for now, the club and its fans are united in understanding the importance of his time away to mourn and honor the memory of his family friend.
