Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is expected to remain out of action until after the October international break, with manager Erik ten Hag offering an update on the player’s recovery. Shaw, who has been battling a calf injury, has not played this season, and despite earlier hopes of a return in September, his recovery has been slower than expected.
Ten Hag provided insight into the situation, stating, “I think it’s probably [Shaw back before the October international break] but not 100 per cent sure.” The manager added, “The plan is to just be back before, but as I say, I can’t say this 100 per cent, it can be shortly after the break.”
Shaw’s injury has caused problems for United’s defence, especially with Tyrell Malacia also out for an extended period. This has left Ten Hag with limited options, and the absence of key full-backs is putting additional pressure on the team. Speaking about the defensive situation, Ten Hag noted, “We are missing key players, and it has been challenging, but we have to adapt. The squad must step up.”
While Shaw was initially expected to make a comeback after the September international break, another setback during pre-season training has kept him sidelined. Ten Hag has been cautious about rushing the player’s return, acknowledging that the schedule has been demanding. “The players are overloaded. This is not good for football, but it’s the reality we have to manage,” he remarked, expressing concerns about the intense fixture calendar.

The manager also commented on the growing strain on players due to the number of matches, echoing sentiments shared by Manchester City’s Rodri. “There are too many games, too many competitions,” Ten Hag said. “We discuss it so many times. It’s clear this is not good for the players.”
Shaw’s absence continues to be felt, and with United’s defense stretched thin, Ten Hag is eager to have him back in the lineup. However, the manager remains cautious about setting exact timelines, stressing that the priority is ensuring Shaw’s full recovery before returning to action.
