Major blow for Manchester City, star midfielder Rodri suffers season-ending ligament Injury

Major blow for Manchester City, star midfielder Rodri suffers season-ending ligament Injury

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a devastating ACL injury during their recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The injury is expected to keep him on the sidelines for an extended period, a huge setback for City as they chase another Premier League title.

Rodri sustained the injury in the first half of the match, clutching his knee in pain before being substituted in the 21st minute. Initial tests conducted on Monday confirmed fears of an anterior cruciate ligament tear. According to a source who spoke with ESPN, further tests are scheduled, but “everything points towards an ACL tear.” Surgery in Barcelona is now likely for the Spanish midfielder.

This injury could not have come at a worse time for both Rodri and City. The 28-year-old was a frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or, having been a key figure in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, where he was named player of the tournament. He had also been central to City’s midfield, contributing significantly across 63 games for both club and country last season.

Rodri condemns congested scheduling in football

Reflecting on the strain modern footballers face, Rodri had recently spoken about the growing concerns over the increasing number of games. “I think we are close to that; it is easy to understand,” he said, referring to the potential for players to go on strike due to the demanding schedule. “I think it’s the general opinion of the players. And if it keeps this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option.”

Rodri’s absence leaves a gaping hole in Manchester City’s midfield, with Pep Guardiola now facing the challenge of finding a replacement. City may look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, with Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace rumoured to be on their radar.

For now, Manchester City will have to adapt to life without Rodri, as they continue their fight for domestic and European glory without their midfield maestro.
