Manchester United are close to a £33.7 million deal for striker Zirkzee

Manchester United are nearing completing a £33.7 million deal for Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.

According to United sources, the club will pay a slight premium on the £33.67 million release clause to secure an extended payment period for the 23-year-old.

The Premier League club is determined to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) regarding loss limits and acknowledges that their current situation is tight and will necessitate discipline in their transfer dealings. Anthony Martial, a long-serving forward, left Old Trafford at the end of last season after his contract expired. The Frenchman’s extended absence due to injury, combined with Marcus Rashford’s decline in form, forced new signing Rasmus Hojlund to shoulder the striking burden.

Hojlund lost his place in Ten Hag’s starting lineup for the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, as the manager deployed Bruno Fernandes as a false nine. Zirkzee joined Bayern Munich from Feyenoord in 2017 and moved to Bologna for around £7.15 million five years later, following loan spells with Parma and Anderlecht.

He scored 12 goals in 37 appearances for Bologna last season, helping them to a surprise Champions League spot this season. Zirkzee was named to Ronald Koeman’s Euro 2024 squad, but he made only two substitute appearances for the Netherlands, totaling four minutes plus injury time. He was introduced into Wednesday’s semi-final loss to England immediately after Ollie Watkins’ winner.
