However, Haaland scored after only 23 minutes against Brighton; City’s No.9 received a wonderful through-ball from Mateo Kovacic, and while his first effort was saved by Bart Verbruggen, he got to poke home the rebound off the crossbar. Manchester City have now suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time with manager Pep Guardiola, but Haaland can leave the Amex with a new Premier League record. Haaland has set a new Premier League record by scoring 75 goals in 77 appearances, surpassing Alan Shearer’s record of 93 games.

Haaland has also scored 75 Premier League goals faster than Harry Kane (115 games), Ruud van Nistelrooy (116 games), Mohamed Salah (117 games), and City legend Sergio Aguero (118 games), who come next after Shearer. The 24-year-old is still at the top of the Premier League scoring rankings this season, thanks to his strike against Brighton taking him to 12 goals in just 11 top-flight games, four over his nearest challenger, Bryan Mbeumo (eight).

Haaland’s latest goal is his fourth in as many league matches against Brighton, and his first at the Amex Stadium since failing to score in his previous visit in May 2023 (1-1 draw). Indeed, Haaland has now scored in 19 of the 21 Premier League stadiums where he has appeared, failing only against Liverpool at Anfield (two games) and Brentford in the Gtech Community Stadium in Birmingham (one game).
