Euro 2024: Spain qualified for the knockout stages with a win over Italy

Spain qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a thrilling win against the reigning champions Italy in Gelsenkirchen.

They created numerous chances and were completely dominant. But they won by a narrow margin thanks to a personal goal by Riccardo Calafiori in the second half.

After being denied by keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for nearly an hour. Alvaro Morata’s flick-on was deflected in by the unfortunate Calafiori’s knee. Despite playing a part in an exciting match, Italy made no response. The meeting of two European giants in the tournament’s group stage raised expectations, and it lived up to them with an electrifying first half.

Nutmegs, Armani, and the Ultimate Domination

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti stated this week that he wanted his team to perform as nicely as if they were dressed in Giorgio Armani suits, but Spain stole the dress code. Giovanni di Lorenzo had a terrible night against Spain’s Williams. Who terrorized him with speed, skill, and an insecurity that stood out on the main stage.

Spain’s best chances came down the left, where Williams dominated proceedings alongside Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, and he was almost rewarded as he curled the ball onto the crossbar. Williams and Yamal repeatedly nutmegged their opponents, prompting cries of admiration from Spanish fans in the stands. Despite working hard and staying in shape everywhere, Italy was unable to contend individually and was lucky not to concede more, but Donnarumma was in top form. As Spain began to tire, players went down with cramps, which was enough to give the Italian fans hope.
