Is the Premier League trophy race already down to two teams?

Leaders Liverpool had a dream weekend following their victory over Aston Villa, Manchester City’s defeat against Brighton, and Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Chelsea. They now lead City by five points, and the rest of the pack by nine or more.

“I wouldn’t put off anyone who is there now, absolutely not,” said MOTD2 analyst and former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott. “Liverpool at a certain point are going to stumble as they will have injury problems like any other team.” However, talking on MOTD2, former Premier League attacker Troy Deeney warned: “If Arsenal lose one more time, I believe they are out of the game. They’ll have to beat both Liverpool and City. “Liverpool is flying under Arne Slot and currently leads the Premier League and Champions League table, having dropped points in only two games this season.

Premier League is down to Liverpool and Man City it seems

They are five points ahead of Manchester City, who have lost four consecutive games in all competitions – something Pep Guardiola had never seen before in his managerial career (excluding penalty shootouts). Despite their recent form and speculation about Guardiola’s future, the Spaniard agreed to a new one-year contract this week, extending his stay at Etihad Stadium to ten years.

It is a timely boost for City, who face another potentially difficult game at home against Tottenham on Saturday (17:30 GMT) as they look to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat. This is the sixth time a team has been five points ahead after 11 games; the previous five all won championships. But City has won the last four Premier League titles, despite trailing the leaders by more than five points at one point in each of those seasons. Liverpool and City each have one Premier League game remaining before their potential blockbuster match at Anfield on Sunday, December 1. Arsenal, who have finished second the previous two seasons, are four points back, level with Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton.
