Manchester United won 1-0 against Fulham in the English Premier League on Sunday. United returned to winning ways in a major way in midweek, defeating Rangers 2-1 in the group stage of the Europa League, and managed to record back-to-back victories in a low-quality match in London.

Ruben Amorim’s side failed to register a shot on target in the first half, and the game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw until Lisandro Martinez broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Martinez tried to strike from the edge of the box, but his shot deflected into the center of the net after hitting Sasa Lukic. Fulham keeper Bernd Leno got his fingertips on the shot, but it looped into the upper right corner, causing the sold-out away section to erupt as Martinez celebrated.

Lisandro Martinez delivers win in forgettable encounter

It was only Ruben Amorim’s fourth Premier League victory in 12 games since taking over United, who climbed three places to 12th in the table. Fulham, who had Joachim Andersen’s late header brilliantly cleared off the goal line by United sub-Toby Collyer, have won one of their past five league games and are ranked tenth.

United’s head coach, Amorim, was pleased with the win but admitted his team still has room for improvement. “It’s critical to have that sense of being away from home. “Great support from the away fans as always,” as per Amorim. “It wasn’t a great game, and you could tell; there were no great chances. We attempted to control the game, but we need to improve significantly.
