The star English full-back Luke Shaw has made some progress with his injury, and this may add up to be a huge boost for Southgate’s side’s upcoming Euro campaign.
His selection raised several questions, yet Southgate gambled to select the Manchester United star as the only recognized left-back.
In Shaw’s absence, right-footed Kieran Trippier stepped up and was seen in the role of a left-back, but over several appearances, he was seen lacking his fluency with the wrong foot. England’s midfield maestros, Bellingham and Foden, were often seen frustrated with Trippier’s failed passing down his side.
Though in Southgate’s term taking Shaw into the Euros seemed a ‘calculated risk’ to him, yet for the English spectators, the decision never seemed to impress.
Shaw, who was expected to have some game time against Denmark, was not seen on the field even in a desperate situation against Slovenia. However, the ex-Southampton star was seen back at the training sessions on Monday, after which, in a post-match interview, Shaw replied “Next game” to the press, portraying his belief to play a major role for England ahead in the Euros.

The Man U full-back played 3 assists and a goal for the Three Lions back in Euro 2020; however, after a year of misfortunes, he was knocked off his position by repetitive injuries for the Red Devils.
Though this would still be a concern for Southgate as he has had very little game time ahead of a knockout clash, the return of a full-time left-back will have him relieved of many problems, the biggest of them being Trippier’s inconsistency down the side.
After Trent Alexander Arnold, who could not fit into his new role in Southgate’s side, this might be the time for Trippier to find himself among the benched players, especially if Luke Shaw is fit enough to not be substituted until the ending minutes of the game.
The defender has been missed by England, especially in attacking down the left wing and providing scoring opportunities to Bellingham, Foden, and Kane. With Saka and Bellingham doing a fair job, Luke Shaw’s return in the Round of 16 clash against Slovakia will likely be a boost to England’s Euro campaign.
